14th Annual Child Welfare Law Update Conference

The Hawaii Court Improvement Program is sponsoring the 14th Annual Child Welfare Law Update Conference that will be held online on Friday, September 4, 2020 through the Zoom virtual platform. The program, which has been planned by a committee composed of Oahu legal practitioners, the Department of Human Services, child welfare community stakeholders, judges, and court staff, begins promptly at 8:30 a.m. and is scheduled to end at 12 noon.  As in the past, the program includes an update on caselaw and state and federal laws (since October 2019) and informs and answers questions regarding recent and planned programs and services of the Family Court, Department of Education, Department of Human Services, and Department of Health.  There will also be presentations on the Pono Process, a grievance process to ensure foster youth rights; and effective virtual `ohana time presented by Professor of Psychology and Director of the Georgetown Early Learning Project, Rachel Barr, PhD.  This conference has been approved by the Hawaii State Bar Association (HSBA) for credit hours.  NASW CEUs have been applied for but not yet confirmed.

You may also participate in the Guardian Ad Litem Statewide Convening scheduled to take place from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. following the Annual Child Welfare Law Update conference.  The program for this session includes a presentation on the Interstate Compact on the Placement of Children, a discussion on effective advocacy, and a case study and discussion about the ethical boundaries and duty of care owed by a GAL.  This convening has been approved by the HSBA for CLE and ethics credit hours.

Attendance for the conference and the Guardian Ad Litem Statewide Convening is free.

Registration will close on August 31, 2020 at 11:59 p.m.
